What this page tests

Updated 26 September 2026: now includes non-European area championships from 2000, and athletes whose first Olympic/World medal came in 2012 or later (was any medal from 2015).

How many major championships (area, Olympic or World) do athletes compete in before their first Olympic/World medal, event by event?

Athletes whose first Olympic/World medal came in 2012 or later. 19 events, men and women.

What we found

Field athletes compete in more major championships than track athletes before their first Olympic/World medal: 3.8, compared with 2.6 for track.

The most: men's Hammer (4.4) and women's Javelin (5.6). The fewest: 3000m SC, 400m and 800m (1.7 to 2.8).

What it means for selection: a field athlete typically needs 1.2 more senior championships than a track athlete before a first global medal. Leaving out a qualified field athlete takes away exactly the experience field medallists have needed.

Scope of data used in this analysis:

  • Competition types: Area (African, Asian, European, NACAC, Oceania, South American, Central American & Caribbean), Olympic and World Championships
  • Area competition dates: 26 Aug 1986 - European Championships, Stuttgart (GER) to 10 Aug 2026 - European Championships, Birmingham (GBR)
  • Olympic/World competition dates: 03 Aug 2012 - Olympic Games, London (GBR) to 13 Sep 2025 - World Championships, Tokyo (JPN)
  • Events: Running (100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 10,000m, 100mH / 110mH, 400mH, 3000m SC), Jumping (HJ, PV, LJ, TJ), Throwing (Shot, Discus, Hammer, Javelin), Combined
  • Prior-championship counts include area, Olympic and World appearances at any earlier date; only athletes whose first-ever Olympic/World medal came in 2012 or later are included.
  • African, Asian, Central American & Caribbean, NACAC, Oceania and South American results: World Athletics from 2018/19; 2000-2017 from each championship's published results, checked event by event. European and Olympic/World results go back to the 1980s.
  • Area championships before 2000 (other than European) are not included, so experience is slightly understated for non-European medallists whose careers began before 2000.
